Many coffee manufacturers use a large rotational drum to roast coffee products. Air roasting is a newer technique that involves placing coffee beans inside a chamber that contains hot air. Air roasting efficiently separates the chaff (outer shell) from each bean. As a result, beverages that are made with air-roasted beans may taste smoother than traditional roasted products.
The Traditional Roasting Process
Have you ever drank a cup of coffee that has a bitter aftertaste? If so, the unpleasant taste could have been directly linked to the roasting process that was used. A standard roasting method utilizes a cylindrical barrel that contains an internal heating component and a mechanical arm. A flame or a heating element may come into contact with a batch of coffee beans. The rotation of the drum aids with heating up both sides of each bean.
Drum roasting may not always produce a consistent batch of coffee. If a coffee bean's outer shell does not separate fully from the bean, it may become charred during the roasting process. This is what may ultimately cause a cup of coffee to have a somewhat harsh flavor.
The Air Roasting Process
The air roasting process involves using a chamber that does not rotate. This chamber will heat up during the roasting process. The beans will remain suspended over the bed of hot air. There will be no mechanical arm coming into contact with a series of beans.
An air roaster is designed to heat beans evenly. As the beans float, the outer shell will be removed from each one. The elimination of the shell will impact the quality of a cup of coffee. Coffee will have a smooth, pure taste. An air roaster can process a batch of beans faster than a drum roaster can.
The Taste Test
If you are curious about the quality of a coffee beverage that has been prepared with beans that have been air roasted, conduct a taste test. Purchase coffee beans that have been processed with an air roaster and a drum roaster. After grinding the beans and making two fresh pots of coffee, prepare two cups of coffee.
Taste the air-roasted coffee first. Then, taste the drum roasted coffee. If you can determine a distinct difference between the two coffee varieties, you may decide to give up the coffee product that you normally consume and continue purchasing air-roasted products instead.
