The 2 Different Types Of Walk-In Commercial Refrigerators

by Richard Schmidt

When it comes to running a restaurant, having a walk-in refrigerator is essential. A walk-in refrigerator provides you with space to keep your food safe. It is also a space that gets a lot of use and has to meet high safety and cleanliness standards, making the refrigerator you choose really important. The two main styles of commercial refrigerator doors are sliding doors and swing doors.

Commercial Refrigerator Type #1: Sliding Door

With a sliding door on your commercial refrigeration unit, the door slides back and forth, allowing you to access about half the wide of the refrigerator via a door. With a sliding door, you are able to slide the door back and forth. This can be nice when you don't want to worry about a door that swings open. With a sliding door, you never have to worry about hitting someone or impeding traffic with the door. The refrigerator area is completely contained within itself.

With a sliding door, you must be careful and make sure that the door slides all the way shut.  You need to train your workers to shut the door. A door that one just flings shut and assumes is shut all the way can waste a ton of energy if the door didn't latch shut, and it could potentially cause damage to your food supply as well.

Commercial Refrigerator Type #2: Swing Doors

Another option for a commercial refrigerator is a swinging door unit. With a swinging door, there is usually a door sweep at the bottom of the door, which means you will need to step over the sweep when going in and out of the fridge. This requires a little more awareness, but the door sweep plays an important function. The door sweep helps seal the fridge by keeping outside air from seeping into the walk-in unit.

With a swinging door, you need to make sure you have enough clearance in your kitchen to easily open the door without ever hitting anyone. Swinging door commercial fridges don't work that well in tight kitchen spaces.

Swinging door fridges can help protect your food, maintain the same temperature well, and are easy to ensure that they are shut. However, you need the space for this type of fridge.

When it comes to choosing the right type of commercial fridge for your space, you need to think about how your kitchen is spaced out in order to determine what type of commercial fridge you should purchase.
